Tabbetha Dobbins

Tabbetha A. Dobbins, Ph.D., is Dean of the School of Graduate Studies at Rowan University and a professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy. A physicist, materials scientist, researcher, and educator, Dr. Dobbins has built a career spanning scientific research, student mentorship, and higher education leadership.

Her research applies synchrotron X-ray and neutron techniques to modern engineering and materials science challenges, including work involving carbon nanotubes, gold nanoparticles, hydrogen energy, and polymer self-assembly. She mentors undergraduate and graduate researchers and creates opportunities for students to gain experience in X-ray and neutron studies at national research laboratories. She has also developed NSF-funded programs that engage high school and college students in science through energy- and biomedical-related research.

Dobbins has received several honors, including a National Science Foundation CAREER Award and the Penn State Alumni Achievement Award. Her service to the physics community has included the American Institute of Physics Task Force to Elevate African American Representation in Undergraduate Physics and Astronomy (TEAM-UP Task Force) and the African Light Source Executive Steering Committee.

Dobbins earned her bachelor’s degree in physics from Lincoln University, a master’s degree in materials science and engineering from the University of Pennsylvania, and a Ph.D. in materials science and engineering from Penn State University.
