Thomas Searles

Prof. Thomas A. Searles is a quantum engineer and experimental physicist advancing quantum information science, photonics, and quantum workforce development. As a Professor of ECE at the University of Illinois Chicago and former inaugural director of the IBM-HBCU Quantum Center, he has built national partnerships, secured major research investments, and mentored 100s of emerging scientists. His leadership connects research excellence with broadening participation for the future quantum technology ecosystem. He currently serves as President of the National Society of Black Physicists, where he was recognized as a Fellow.  He also holds recognition as the inaugural AIP/NSBP Joseph Johnson Award winner, the 2025 BEYA Award for Educational Leader and a recipient of an NSF CAREER Award.
